EL Karlstrom 1956 Bufro larrea April 22 Big Ben Lake, 6750 ft., S. B. Co., Calif. at 1:45 P.M. Water ranges 23-25° C. 1" breadth surface. On the south side the ponds are separated from the scattered yellow (Jeffrey, too?) pine stand by 150 yards and probably a similar distance to the north. Sedges green at pond bottom, to a foot height. No frogs or spawn found, although extensive ponds seem suitable habitat. Water extends 300-400 yards E and W and a maximum of 100 yards across. I covered about 150 yards of pond edge. Adults and subadults dug out of soft earth near ponds upper part Matcalf Bay on Big Ben Lake. June 29 Ahwahnee Miler, 4100 ft., Yosemite Valley, Calif. 9:50 A.M. Visit has bright warm morning. The water table is very high. Estimate of depth where I had my 1955 depth-measuring stick is 4½ feet. High water table results in extensive deep water on south side of road to the River. Sedges and grasses thick and lush, height to 4-5 feet many clumps. Study ponds A & B now continuous ponds of water. Log at SE end of pond A completely submerged. Hyla tadpoles abundant, may just about ready to emerge third legs well developed. No Bufo toads observed either last night or today. Adult ? (spawned out?) found active in deep grasses. Closeal 25.6° C. at 10:05 A.M. (C.D.S.T.) Air 1" above substrate 26° C. (bulb shaded) No breeze, but clear day.
