April 22 Southwest edge of Baldwin Lake, 6674 ft.
San Bernardino Co., Caly.
We arrived at the lake (presently a dry playa with numerous tire tracks raising the dust) about 11:30 A.M.
First checked out retaining ponds at N end, then skirted the lake shore dry dirt road to south and southwest. (Joe Goodman of Redlands College indicated to PCS that he'd taken brooz here. One small spring seep yielded a juvenile toad collected by Dick Edwin quarter mile distant a larger pool yield recently hatched out larvae. Water depth 1½" where eggs found. Eggs spread over area 2½ x 1 foot. Air temp. 24.1°C.
at 12:20 P.M. Water 1" beneath surface 26.8°C.
Sample taken. This pond not over 3 miles deep and about 40 feet across. Dry lake shore 50 yards to NE.
Larger roadside pond near to SW neck of Lake.
50-90 yards x 35 mil probably 2-3 feet deep middle. Dick Edwin found 2 subadults 110-50 mm.
5-V) in oozy mud under section of dry 2 feet across. charcoal of ore 23°C. Substrate 11.5°C. in rodent burrow opening. log 6 feet from water's edge. Air temp. 19.1°C. Strong, cool coastal wind; blue skies scattered billowy clouds 12:35 P.M.
Big Bear Lake. The upper part of Big Bear Lake is separated by an earthen dam. Water is limited to shallow ponds several acres in extent but maximum depth under one foot. Air Temp. 16.5°C.
