Bufo boreas
March 3 Richland locality - arrived here 5:15 P.M. Day
clear, sunny but with cool winds. Water level
even higher than previous (Feb. 7) visit. East
and south margin of pond A surveyed. Hydn
lodgole2 to 18-20 mm. total length but sense.
Toid louae have hatched out, and maximum
size about 14-15 mm. total length. The
tode are so scattered that a half dozen
hatchers would be expected - yet numbers of
tode not high. The rise of a few inches
in pond level and some cold snaps might
account for the lack of reproductive success
to date in pond A. Interestingly enough, I
found no egg strings at all. All corous
were from swimming stage ( mm.) to 5:35 P.M.
larger. No adults seen. Water 16.5° C. Air. 12.5°c.
Continued search of switten rock of pond B.
Shallow sedge area had 3 groups of
fairly recently laid egg strings (embryos to
debastula stages). One group strung out over a roughly
circular area 8½-10 feet across - may be from
one female. Water shallow here with a maximum
depth of 4 inches. Eggs at varying depths from
½" to bottom. Water temp. 15.8° C. 1" below
surface. Air above water 11.0° C. at 5:50 P.M.
No hatched-out larvae seen west & south edge pond
B. No adults out on land yet, although RR
embankment has aboded this pond area for
