Buffo lunea
Richmond (cont.)
Feb. 7 edge of pond where shallow water (few to 10-12")
fails to cover sedge and grasses. Here seemed
to be a toad every 3-4 feet on the average.
Two pairs in complexus. To count the toads
and check for dipped toes I picked them up
and then tossed them out toward deeper water
of pond. Returning to this area of concentration
after an absence of 3-4 minutes I would find
again as many toads in the shallows (where
they couldn't have returned). The animals habit
of diving for the bottom when disturbed means
almost every other toad is not picked up when
one dives a light into an area. There could
easily have been 200 adults in pond A alone.
I did not see eggs where complexing pairs
found, although 1xyla cluster (only one found)
in pond A had embryos in free-swimming stage.
Toad eggs probably available, but it would
appear that Buffo breeding is just getting
underway.
Sexual dimorphism checked when pairs found.
O's are more greenish on the average whereas
F's tend toward grayish g.c. and possibly
more large spots or reticulative. O's smoother
skinned and have greater degree webbing trail feet.
Some pattern and sex dichromism about 3/4 pairs
looked at, but it couldn't be relied upon
in all cases. Three toads, 1 F and 2 O's removed
