ELKadstern 1956 Bufo boreas Richard Feb. 7 1.3 mi. N, 0.2 mi. W of Civic Center, Central Costa Co., Calif. - Dyla first heard along railroad tracks again SW of Albany Hill about two weeks ago. Gerry Robinson and I made a check of Richard pond sites 9:15-10:15 P.M. tonight. Weather warmed up past four days. Air ting. Tonight varied between 8-10° C., no freeze. The ponds A & B are small lakes after excessive winter rainfall. We quietly approached pond B from N end where a ditch of water almost extends to Sanford Street. No toads heard but Dyla in loud chorus. Adult toads out in water. One ♂ croaked 11.5° C. at 9:20 P.M. Water temp. 11.8° C. Air 1" above wet grass at edge of pond 9.6° C. We began a census of pond B, covering 2/3 area of pond border and over shallow south end (pond about 125 yards length) approx. count: 46 ad. ♂, 4 ad. ♀ and all in anglexia. No toads out of water. None toe-digged, and we did not dig any toads tonight. Pond A likewise high with water but less spread out since it lies in a deeper bowl between raised railroad beds. More toads seen here along borders of entire pond. Estimate 75 ♂, 6 ♀ all adult and all in the water. One smallish but breeding size ♀ found unat- tested. All other ♀'s in anglexus. No calls heard.
