Bulfo cornuc
June 29 Tioga Pass study area, 9900 ft., Mono Co., Calif.
Photographed study area 3:15 p.m.
Voigtlender 4x5 camera
Blitz-X #1 1/200 at F20 facing N.E. down
study area from point 75 yards from station.
#2 of study pool (same exposure)
#3 facing NW across study pond. 1/100th F=24.
Tremendous amount of snow for this date in the season
I estimate 4/5 of study area surface has remaining
snow cover, on N-facing ridge drifts are to
8-10 feet in depth as revealed by streams
cut faces. Study pond has snow broke along
E edge but mostly free of snow. I heard out
Bulfo both calling 3:30 P.M. (D.S.T.) but
no heavy crowsing, sky 2/4 clear with some
filmy clouds to east. Bright sun, gale winds
up to 30 m.p.h. gusts. Latter makes it
difficult to hear amphibian calls.
2 adult males on bare fairly dry ground lee side
of change B. albiculus albiruncia 60 yards SW of
weather station. Air temp. 14.50C. 1" above ground
clearer of we took 15.80C at 4:46 P.M. Both
males - no toes clipped. 3rd adult male found
to feed from other two. Apparently basking in full
sunlight (sun at 30° angle horizon) clearer
not gotten since he moved away under a log. Ridge
here with pines is an "island" situation between
fields of snow. Hibernation site under logs (?)
