June 30 found in meadow 1/2 mi. E x SE of The Niggile,
8200 ft. Toads collected here last year - none today.
Continued to Lower Blue Lake. Snow drifts along road in Lodgepole pine forest. Road impassable beyond a point 2/3 length from SE end of lake.
Only vehicles to make Upper Blue Lake were 4-wheel drive jeep-type command cars. I hiked road over much snow about 2 miles to NW and Upper Lake 3 p.m.
Day has been clear and mild with light freezes, ice floating along edges Upper Lake. Heavy erosion on east side, much snow around lake. Heavy melt at NE end has streams flowing over wide surface area. Heavy willow growth. Collected eggs of Bifro crenux, adult (28 and subadult B. borers (4-5), a single o B. crenus under log with three adult borer males.
No other crenux found. This is first recognized case of sympatry between species. Alex Colbourn (now of Calif. Fish & Game) had collected a male of each species at Upper Blue Lake but they were both called borers at Stanford museum where I uncovered the fact. Single Hydra also collected.
Returned to car at Lower Blue Lake 6 p.m. Watered the angihlas for return trip. Some good-looking finds near west side Carson Pass. Returned home via Jackson, Stockton, Tracy. Arrived Albany 2:30 a.m.
