EL Karstian 1956 Journal June 28 Left Albany 5:15 A.M. with family in Plymouth. Merced 8:30 A.M., getting hot even by this time. Yosemite 11:30 A.M. clear and hot. Afternoon at Museum. Snow depth data from lower Boyt Admini- stration Bldg. Brief night check Strawberry and Churchme Meadow 10-11:15 P.M. Hydracaula adult found and numerous tree-frog tadpoles nearing metamorphosis. no toad larvae seen or adults. One calling male bullfrog Churchme Meadow, probable escape from Churchme Hotel pond where several had been intro- duced. Evening cool and clear. Merced River exceptionally high as is general water table Valley floor. Much standing water along roads and trails, lush vegetation. Overnight stop Camp 19. June 29 Left Valley at noon for Tioga Pass, lunch Tuolumne Meadow 2:30 P.M. Tuolumne River forming large flood lobes over broad meadow. Much snow on perches and down slopes. Tioga Pass 3:15 P.M. Snow depth along road near the Pass height of car. Many and Bill Hood reported depth here of 10 feet a week ago (near parking lot south of Entrance Station). Dora Meadows still 3/4ths covered with snow. Birds House, larger Tuolumne Meadows District, estimates a melt of several feet [illegible] few days. From my experience of past two summers, the season is about three weeks later than 1954 or 1955. Cornus out and breeding but only vicinity of study pond where standing water available.
