April 24 previously reported this locality. Dick Eakin roved
I Digasaurus dorsalis subadult 12:45 p.m.
Westward for lunch. Gale winds and sandstorms
continued into afternoon. Took Carter street route.
I D.O.R. subadult mosticophis floriglam 1 mi.
N Westward, Imperial Co. Specimen not kept.
D.O.R. stujed skunk 4 mi. N. Westward.
Skin rolled inside out, probably by a turkey
buzzard, but scent glands untouched. We drove
Westward on Estelle Road to Obsidian Buttes.
Brushish pools around Buttes which have resulted
mainly from the bulldozing operation by
a gravel outfit (junior for building blocks?)
located near Buttes. No birds seen. Visited
mud Pats about 3 mi NE of Obsidian Buttes.
These supposedly were the source of some salts
in Disney's "Living Desert". Only a dribbling
of silty water in a small pool 4 feet wide
However, crust of mud over extensive area (now
dry) suggest considerable gas eruption has
occurred.
Morning dust clocked by truck speedmeter
~ 23 m.p.h. Wind about 20-25 m.p.h. at
right angle to bird's flight.
I dead Tringa found dead east side
of Salton Sea 1/4 mile NW of mud Pats. Adult
15-16" carpus length. Apparently worked up by
wave action. Bob Stebbins knows of no record of
