EL Kardatum 1956 Journal April 22 Estimate locality (mileage record lost) as 35 miles south of Lucerne Valley (town). The red rover log stretched out at edge of road. It apparently was not really warmed up, since I was able to mose it with a leather hose at the end of the heavy smoke stick. The burned lizard was spotted running at a terrific clip across the road in front of me, trail erect as it ran. Bob found it on top of a concrete mound about 14 feet from the road edge. We returned to state Highway 18 and continued up back side of San Bernardino Mts. to Baldwin and Big Bear Lakes. Sceloporus magister (few) seen working on boulders along the highway SE of Lucerne Valley. Also Uta and Sceloporus occidentalis. Baldwin Lake, 6674 ft., San Bernardino Co. We arrived about 11:30 A.M. Lake dry and twisters swirling up dust. First stop at north end of playa. No animals evident save retaining pools for watering cattle. We continued around east and south end of lake. Dick Eakin collected a juvenile B. brevirostris in small spring seep south end of lake. Only food spawn found save area (recently bottled out larvae). at SW end of lake near the rock portion of the westward-extending arm of lake adult and subadult B. brevirostris (4) taken. Continued to Big Bear Lake. Sunny but cool breeze.
