June 14 Finished all but about lost 100 feet of reel 4
tonight 8:00 - 8:30 A.M. Campground at lower end
of Rock Creek Lake, 9700 ft., Mono Co., Calif.
A male California jay and female about 30-40 feet away
in a lodgepole pine set near a stirring current. The
cascading Rock Creek as it tumbles out of Rock Creek
Lake is the roar in the background. It's cold, 6°C.
Robins, deer juncos, a few white-crowned sparrows
have been heard in the area.
June 15 Lost 100 feet of reel 4 at Red Meadow Campground,
1500 ft., near Devil Postpile Mall. Remnant, Madera
Co., Calif. About 8:00 - 8:30 A.M. Lodgepole pine forest.
Small creek nearby; some large other types of jays. Picked
up Oregon juncos mostly but robins, white crowned
sparrows, cow-birds in local area.
June 16 Reel 5 [illegible] some locality 7:30 - 8:30 A.M.
Robins, white-crowned sparrows, juncos, chickadees, western
torngers, hairy woodpeckers, purple finches, cow-birds all
in the area. High-pitched shrill notes one of the
"pocket-squir" (ground squirrel) 3 of which were standing
out dry their dinners out in the meadow. Breezy
this morning, cool after slight hail and rain showers
of last night.
Reel No. 6 Purple finch, hairy woodpecker mostly.
Thought I heard a mountain quail sound off twice.
Recorded 8:30 - 9:15 A.M. Sunny, warmer but windy.
Lodgepole, Jeffrey pine hillside.
