E.L.Karlstrom 1955 Great Gray Owl Oct 23. Skins of two adults had been prepared by Doug Hubland of Yosemite museum Oct. 19 and were lying out on desk in research room. Information from Hubland was that Marshall B "Buck" Evans, District Ranger at Matter, had found the pair (one ad & one juv) shot (with a .22 likely) and hung on a fence at Acherman meadow. Locality is 3 mi. N x NNE of Big Oak Flat Road ( Hwy 120) just where the highway leaves Yosemite National Park. NWw about 5 miles N x NW of Crane Flat Entrance Station to Y.N.P. Elevation 4700 feet. Specimens a little rige when Doug got them but he was able to put up a good pair of skins for the Yosemite museum. I tried to call Evans but phone line was out to Matter Ranger station. Sent him an office memo from museum requesting more details. This species considered an uncommon W.V. except for breeding pair spotted vicinity of Astinder Rocke south of Valley in Y.N.P. ( Grinnell ad Storer) 1924 I'm wondering if the pair killed could have been a resident breeding pair(!?) Hubland stated he planned a press release concerning the wanton slaying of these quite rare (for California) birds.
