Chelydra serpentina
Aug. 27 Phone conversation with "Buck" Evans at Matter District Ranger Station. He reports seeing pond turtles the size of SO+ pieces with soft flexible shells in ponds at end of May or first part of June near Hatchy Dam, elevation about 3700 feet, Tulare Co., Calif. This may be a clue that the turtle eggs over-winter either after being laid in fall or female retains them too until early spring. Fact that Myrtle, the Fertile Turtle (female under study) laid eggs in July suggests summer or fall laying. Stallbreis 1954:171 reports April-August laying for species.
Sept. 11 Myrtle preserved and taken to MVZ along with the eggs which have been kept in shallow can of soil. Check of eggs by transmitted light shows no particular change. Some have good-sized air space but yolk continues to fill up about 1/2 the space (4) space Paul Anderson looked at the eggs. He felt a couple looked "possibly fertile", suggested shifting them to sand.
Oct. 27 All kept at lab temperature 20-25°C without special care except occasional dampening of the soil or sand medium. 5 of the obviously un-developed eggs opened, all were spoiled and showed no sign of even a good germinal disc. Two more opaque (due to shell?) eggs kept on sand in 8" wide finger bowl. One shows
