July 23 circledotin data on adult & captured early June
by Marshall "Buck" Evans near Hatchery Dam.
Turtle in aquarium out on rock porch of Yavate
museum. Dark Water saw no eggs at 8 A.M.
new Giantoli saw first at 8:40 A.M. Between
9:00 and 9:05 the second was laid. Fifth egg
came at 9:25 A.M. 3rd & 4th about 5-10 minute
intervals. There was a small amount of water in
bottom of aquarium. New added some soil but
she laid directly in the shallow (<1 cm) muddy
water.
Mary & Bill Word got photos 35 mm. with strobe
as & laid number 5. About 15 secs. prior to
gigance of # 5 the hind legs were drawn forward
and under her. The cloacal opening was about
3/4" above the aquarium bottom as egg extruded.
motion of egg steady and gradual. Slow movement
of tail to side did push the egg slightly, but
there apparently was no attempt to manipulate eggs
with her hind legs. She did not move forward or
back after ovipositing. Head forward & elevated 30°
during laying out. At 9:53 A.M. the tail was
slowly moved away in an arc from her body
where it had been pressed
for last 10-15 min.
