Idyla regilla
May 18 Yosemite Valley, Mariposa Co., Calif. Idyla chorus still strong evening and at night in the valley.
Today seen at Bentical Meadow, few, not yet worked full hind leg development. At Stonerock Meadow 10:15-11:00 P.M. about ten adults, both ♂ & ♀ out on dirt path and among dry leaf litter. There is a scarcity of suitable breeding pools this locality. My impression is that Idyla got a late start (low water table) breeding this spring due to dryness of valley prior to May.
May 19 Ahwahnee Meadow, 4000 ft. Yosemite Valley. Dramatic example of effect of light (and temp?) on breeding ♂'s. I was working around study ponds in this meadow at 5-7 P.M. Little or no chorus until shadows descended over area at 6:15, instantaneous chorus of about a dozen males which either moved to stations in pond or had been set there. I listened for similar effects on any frogs in vicinity but only Idyla heard. Idyla males may be heard calling any time of day but usually only from concealed positions in grass or under objects.
