Hyla regilla
Jan. 10 1.3 mi. N, 0.2 mi. W Civic Center, Richmond
Cantia Costa Co., Calif. First check of this
pond area along S.R. tracks (see Bufo notes
for description of area). At 4:30 P.M. the
weather overcast, cool, air temp. above dange
grass 11.0°C., water temp. 1" below surface
11.5°C. Recent rains have swollen ponds adjacent
to railroad bed. Few male Hyla calling
intermittently but no general chorus. No eggs
seen in ponds.
Feb. 1 night check of same locality. A raucous
Hyla chorus from all ponds and smaller
pools in area. Rains since Jan. 10th have
increased size of ponds, probably 6" rise water
level and 10+ yards more width. A half
dozen egg clusters collected at one end
of pond W side of N-S running tracks (just
S of small manufacturing plant). One pair
taken in complexus, only 2 females collected.
Eggs early cleavage. Breeding of Hyla just
getting started. Cold, clear night. Air temp.
7:35 P.M. 8.2° at 2" above water. Air temp.
over dry grass surface 5.8°C. Water temp.
9.8°C.
Noted curious case of a male adult
Hyla "inflated" subcutaneously and actually
floating on water surface (see sketch). It
was helpless when rolled over on rock but
