Hydromantes
Feb. 17 - Co., Calif. Search made here for platycephalus but no luck. Patchy snow under fir and pine on this south slope. Heavy patches at immediate base of rock faces. Eucroa taken. Plenty of seep from melting snow but no Hydros.
Stebbins collected 2 April 1954 at this very site.
April 13 Buelburg, Mono Co., Calif. A quick check here at 5:15 P.M. Too dry for salamanders. Ground under litter is almost bone dry. We had hit it right in February.
April 26 Same locality. Recent rains have left slope soaked with moisture, although surface is drying out 2 P.M. today. However, it was damp enough under some slabs of slate for Onedes (4) + Batrachoseps. Dirt yielded water when compressed between fingers. John and Sarah Burns also were turning stones & litter. No Hydromantes during one hour search. Euceces gillberti (2), one Diadophis also taken. Taricha trapped in cistern, alive.
A quick search along roadside about 3 miles east of Buelburg revealed nothing but a single juvenile Taricha. Cold seep water dripping off ledges to form puddles along Hwy 140. Slate rubble saturated. Conditions appear ideal for Hydromantes if to be found along road. None taken. Possibly too dry later in spring & summer.
