Hydromantes brunneus
Feb. 17 2 mi. S of Bruceling, 1900 feet, Mariposa Co.,
Calif. 9:15 A.M. Dick Russell collected first
Hydro. taken this locality, thus extending known
range 3 miles southward from Joe Cornice
type locality (0.7 mi. NE Bruceling). Small
creek cascades down 30-40° NE facing slope
here. Area has been "controlled"-burned and appears
baldly scarred. Interestingly enough, the Hydro
must have been ranging out from the stream
since it was found about 20 yards away from
the boulder-stream drain, under a rock in
the burned-off area. Stebbins got one more
Hydro closer to the stream edge in moist
rock-to-rock situation. Air temp. here 100 C.
Good seepage on slope.
Bruceling, 1500 feet, Mariposa Co., Calif. 10:15
A.M. Salamander-collecting conditions fine. Hydromantes
also taken here but in numbers (total 13) along
with Oureides and Batrachryges. Found under
wet cottons, boards, pieces of spruce in litter
heaps, rocks. Amazingly (for Hydram.) easy
to collect. I took a pair of adults under
a flat piece of thin 16" x 28", the ♂ > 8 inches
from the ♀. See Stebbins' notes for temperatures.
Recent rains have ground area moist. Sky overcast
during our collecting. One young Diadoghis collected
from under a board.
