El Karstam 1955 Buffer cones Oct. 8 and the first out on the porch Eckhart survived to correlate the readings for me. On Sept. 2'3 the position of max-min thermometer was changed. Unfortunately Bergen Carter placed it in sunlight. Moffaty made the switch to shaded side of front. The porch readings gotten at the Station will probably average several degrees higher than a "true ground temperature" but general changes will correlate. The search for tagged tools proved unsuccessful. Beckman beta-gamma counter (no er phone), Trivedol gauge counter, and Scintillometer all used. My tools had picked up some radioactivity apparently when I made my trip. The highly sensitive scintillometer picked it up from me, rendering the use of the more sensitive ranges useless. David Robinson used the same counter with better success in the afternoon. The "hot spots" of soil offer some difficulties but those can be followed out and the site eliminated as a tool retreat. The big question is how far and how deep the tools range in their fold movements. Another attempt with the instruments may yet yield results. Oct. 22 Trega Pass. Arrived 9:45 A.M. Manual sets made behind station and along swirlet in study area. Checks made 2 geiger counters, 1 scintillometer covering area F pad A. Air temp. 7.8°C. (6.2) 2" about ground. Soil temp. 2" below surface (worst) 2.5°C. 10:10 A.M.
