ELI Karlstein 1955 Buffo canyon June 26 note mean size of throe 2.4 miles S of Route 4. Promoti effect of algae grazing noted here. A heavy 3/4 to 1/2" mat of green (El-gn.?) filamentous algae covers sawgeze area 8x20'. Average water depth 3/4". Two concentrations of feeding toda at one corner have completely grazed off the algae over areas 3'x1' and 2x2'. In addition small patches of toda have found open holes in the algol mat. Water temp. see 1/2" below surface 27.8°C. here where toda congregated. 2:42 P.M. Air temp. bulls sided 11.5°C. 1" above wet log. moderate winds, almost totally clear sky. Yearling toda collected away semi-dry sedges. No adults taken. Highland Lake, 8500 ft., Alpine Co., Calif. NE end of lake along stream outlet. Air temp. 15.2°C. 3:15 P.M. Excellent sawgeze pool at stream from eastern slope and lake area. No egge or (2?) todgodes as yet. About a dozen adults collected mostly away willow clump near the stream. Yearling toda very abundant. Single taken ad preserved. Ad. ov in willow clump closed temp. 23.1°C. at 3:40 P.M. No males taken in pool. This is open country with apparently shallow soil. Scattered lodgepole and white- fir birke pine or best small stony providing SW and W winds. Toda occupying open windows over slight wolly gentle slopes to NE.
