EL Karlstum 1955 Buffo canyon May 19 Bareggy Mdw., 7200 ft., Y.N.P. Mariposa Co., Calif. 1:45 P.M. Max-min. (air) 10°-70° for one week. Meadow clear of snow except for timbered margins and along road. S side closing rapidly, stream flow moderate. N side with surface seeps and very boggy. Run-off streams and pools extensive, to 2-3" depth, silty bottom. Air temp. 1:50 P.M. 21°C. Water (surface pool) 22.6° C. Flow in 10" deep channel 10.8° C. Meadow a maze of microtus burrow costs and mule tracks. Tamarack Gin Flat, 7100 ft., on Tioga Pass Road (to 2') Mariposa Co., California 3:30 P.M. Snow cover 3/4 of open area but melting fast. Large pond 50 x 20' formed on N side of road. Maximum depth 8". Ibex (few) crossing but none seen. Probably under edge of snow border bordering pool. Water temp 7.1° C. Air 2' above water 16.5° C. at 3:40 P.M. Robin, Baird chickadee, 1 red-breated nuthatch, junco in Gin Flat area. Road to Tamarack Flat closed up by snow. I had to open fire gate above Carrs Flat to get use line, but road mostly clear of snow. Conditions okay right for emergence of canines.
