Elkardstrom 1955 Buffy canyon May 19 large and slobs of work I could turn on 1/2 shad at 10 A.M. Cast skin of Geobrotus found under log, too broken me to take. Ants, carpels, beetles under wetted grasses of brook. (2 mi. NE Chugwam, 7050 ft) 3.3 road miles NE Chugwam. Second stage tree where road makes another wide bend in toward the slope and creek passes under road. 10:15 A.M. Corridor zone meadow, 80-100 yards across and extending general S/E direction for over 300 yards. Meadow fairly open but scattered big towering (to 100+ feet) red fir-sugar pine stands bordering and at least two groves of quaking aspen breaking it up even the central open part. Corn lilies to 4", goose, sedges (?) scattered but to 2" some places. Snow half gone from meadow, remaining is 14-16" max. depth and melting fast. Running stream, shallow, four yards wide running NW direction, a tributary of Crouse Creek. Water also occurs shallow sheets over much of bottom part of meadow. I turned over extensive cover along NE margin of meadow (see Encarta account) but no signs of toads. Full warm sunshine, no breeze. Robins numerous, mt. chickadees, Audubon's warblers out. 11:20 took Kodachrome #17 facing W across meadow (Encarta log) 11:35 A.M. Water temp stream 13.4° C. Air 2" above meadow (bulb shaded) 21.1° C. algae in surface run-off at lower end of meadow. Bova tods in silty bottomed yards in stream.
