May 10 Beargrass mdw, 7200 ft., Y.N.P., Murgina Cr., Calif.
9:45 P.M. Night check along road. Sky clear and star-lit. Air temp. 2" above dry snow surface 4.5°C.
Water temp. in surface snow run-off pool 1°C. No toads calling at several localities along road between Bridger Pass and Beargrass. Left max-min. for air temp.
May 11 Returned to same locality. Bright sun, light breeze, azure blue skies. Meadow 7/3 rds snow covered but bare over 40-50 feet wide where creek flows down meadow and also under lodgepole pines. Maximum snow depth about 18-20" Min. reading on max-min. thermometer was 29° F. for last night. I housed the thermometer in a weather station set placed at edge of lodgepole pine stand S side of road. Meadow saturated with melt water.
Water temp. in melt pool 1½" deep 12.5°C. at 10:40 A.M. Air 1" above wet meadow 9.0°C. (Hull-model) no toad activity.
May 19 2.9 road miles NE Chiguwain, 6800 ft., 9:40 A.M. Tributary of Grone Creek. I hiked through drifted snow (to 5-6' depth but other spots clear in open areas and along creek) about 200 yards SE of Glacier Point Road. This is first big herd in road NE of Chiguwain which leads into round the ridge. Small bowl-like enclosed meadow adjacent to creek. Open area 80x100 yards bordered by white pine-sugar pine forest. Sheets of water 40-50 feet across in most level places 3-4" deep, clear cold. No toads out or under
