Elkardetham 1955 Buffo toads July 8 Single maternized tood in my Churchose park. Since many toad larvae were present as late as a few weeks ago I suggest that toads have a greater tolerance for temp. and possibly low oxygen, salt etc. Cannibalism and toads' carnivorous habits may also be a factor in weeding out toad larvae. As I approached yard A this afternoon a flock of 8 Brewer's blackbirds flew up from margins of the puddle. Numerous bird droppings at edge of puddle added evidence for avian predation. Sun hot. There were no large number of insects on mud surface. Two adult toods collected in grasses, one near (od. 05) Sedge yard B, the other (od. ?) in grass rear yard E. Deimatic freezing possible due to heavy green cover providing a good 80% shade coverage. All known toad breeding sites apparently dried up this area. The outlook for successful Bufo repro- duction had seemed good Churchose meadow. High "pond" temperatures recorded today when toads present 30.1° C. See July 29 for tood patch. July 19 ½ mile E x S E Myrtle, 8200 ft, Alpine Cr. Cali. 4:30 a.m. Check box of locality where 2 adults collected June 27 of this year. Clear warm afternoon but not a sign of toods or todgates. Corn lillies opened up fully a short xx. Ground surface drier but still moist in low areas and in golden lumious. Suitable breeding sites appear to be present along
