ELKadotum 1955 June 27 Cherty Valley, 7700 ft., Alpine Co., Calif. - swarming mosquitoes & flies miserable as I write. Water semi-clean. Some logs near edge. Turned over but no toads. Pond adjacent to road barred off from pasture so cattle apparently do not wade here. Deer tracks wrong. Rare adult collected and photos. Voughten 4 x 5 camera #4 blue-x 1/100th F10.5 frog pond toward W x SW from point 60 feet away. #5 close-up of tote margin of pond. F8 at 1/100th Kodachrome #1 frog N x NE up Cherty Valley with pond & willow foreground 1/50th at F8. Continued my road to Blue Lake, ½ mi. E x SE of the ridge, 8200 ft., Alpine Co., Calif. Adult (small) ? found in glazed pocket gopher burrow in field of corn lilies. Ground temp. 23.7° C. at 12:25 p.m. Air temp. mouth of 6" deep burrow (shrub shaded) 19.7° C. Sun hits ¾ths of bottom of burrow while is 2" wide at bottom, 6" at top. Ground is moist just under surface but no water can be squeezed from crudly ball pressed between fingers. Open meadow with rocky interior margins & very scattered lodgepole pines. Some boggy small ponds at seepage areas. Abundant patches of willows (to 10') and buttonweed blooming Corn lilies, Grasses & sedges, plantain (?) to 6-8" pasture land. Snow on rocky N-facing slope. Meadow
