ELKadatum 1955 Buffs Grass June 24 Alburnes meler, Yosemite Valley occupy deeper parts of the pond; food lower at the margins. not a temperature factor necessarily since the Hydr will usually occupy the upper warmer water layers where it is just as warm as the margins. This ecologic segreting inures full utilization of the pond area. June 27 Christ Valley, 7700 ft., Olinic Co., Calif. We canvassed roadside area in Faith Valley a few form miles north of here but found no signs of toads. There is an adult bruesz in Muz collection from Faith Valley taken by RC Smith. Night air temp. Last night at 9:35 P.M. was 6.5 C. No freeze but a cold evening. Both evening & morning clear in Faith Valley. At 10:30 A.M. we drove up into Christ Valley, another long open meadow grazed by cattle. Small streams wander thru flat area. Clumps of willow leafed out and to 15' height line parts of stream channels. Toads found along margins of pond 75 x 60' x 5'deep middle. Water temp. 22.1 C. at edge in water <3/4" deep where a grape congested. Temp. 16.80C. 3' out, 6" deep, where scattered tods present. took & preserved sample collected. mufled sand and gravel bottom. Sedges line margin, as to 10" height. Willow clumps in middle of pond & along margin. Corn dillies (opened 1/2 way) and penurculas in bloom are prominent plants. Air temp (shaded shade) 17.2 C. at 10:55 A.M. Clear skies, warm, no freeze.
