El Karattem 1958 Buffalo broom Jun 24 Abutaher Lake, Yoz Valley. Max-min 96-36° F at 1:40 P.M. Present reading 83° F. Clear skies, windy. I raised Taylor air thermometer 20 F to 77°. The Tog water thermometer is quite accurate, running somewhat fast but ± 1° of temp. I got with shoulder's quick-see thermometer. Pond level at 9 3/4". The float in water on grasses although the staked and is still floating. I moved the float out deeper. Pond A 1/3 rd of water area, Pond B 1/2 origin area. Wet bottom margin a deep mat of wet green grass. Stranded Hydra and Buffalo tobs few per square yard. Bird droppings abundant. Half dozen Brewer's blackbirds now in this area. Meriotes operios in marginal matted grasses. Buffalo tadpoles with third legs developed in depression in mud 2x2 x 3/4" deep. Was stranded once as I waddled but flapped back out into the depression, no way to find deeper water. Water temp 29.5° C at 2:15 P.M. No emergent young found edge of pond. Sample of tadp taken. Brief night check here 10:15-10:45 P.M. yielded no adult tobs. Single or Hydra head in area. Cool evening but den, night air charged with campfire smoke. Tall grasses in pond area seems unsuitable now for food location. Yet have seen on putwage at edge of pond. Sweeps (about 20) made of pond B with long handled dip net. Hydra outnumber Buffalo 20 to 1 this pond. Aquatic insects abundant same as are weeks ago. No Buffalo gotten middle of pond. Hydra
