Bufo boreas
June 9 Connel meadow, 7645 ft., Seina Nall. Forest –
canavus toads as R. muscosa food. Under logs
where first two toads collected we took 3 young
Thamnophis elegans . Another we sawe size and a
larger adult got away. No Hyla seen but a few
mole were calling from distance. The scarcity of
Hyla toads is unusual since varied breeding sites
available. Pond (D) (see map.) had a number of
Hyla but 1/6 as numerous as Bufo toad.
We covered almost the entire meadow area tonight
concentrating on the vergins. No toads seen any under
pins in dry stuff where I expected them. No toad
eige heard. Breeding here appears thin. Toxopids are
at same stage of growth in Yosemite Valley even though
we are now 3600 feet higher. Selection for early
breeding in montane areas vs well as canvus?
Seems so.
June 10 Drew and I hiked up the trail about 2 ½ miles
to Summit meadow, 8000+ ft. Rana abundant, a few
Hyla subadults taken, and Batrachyges under pine logs
(see Bat. species account) Small pellets of snow are
under trees but meadow clear and lush. Fair gradient
here although shallow seep water available to toads.
Bufo probably has not guided me into this particular
meadow.
Photo (Kedchume) #25 taken of Connel meadow facing
southward toward some pools where toads present. The
creek is just beyond.
