El-Kadethym Bufo brevis May 24 1.3 mi. N, 0.2 mi. W Centa Carter Richmond, Carter Carter Co., Calif. - 2:30 P.M. This area not visited since March 23, 1956. Pond A has dried up to a point where only 1/5 of original pond area is covered by water. Maximum depth 15-16" largest pool on west side. Heavy sedge + cattail growth, latter for 7 feet. Water slightly muddy. Water temp 1" below surface in water 10" deep (very today) 27.8°C at 3:37 P.M. Air 2" above water, bulbs shaded 21.9°C. Undisturbed toads select surface layers of water probably for optimum temps. Little crogs in bloom. Bufo and Rana toads emerging late this afternoon from under sedge and grass stems. Largest Bufo toad [illegible] body length, Bufo smaller <15 mm. Body length. Widespread numerous dispersion of a toad over all available water suggests migration subsequent to my March 23 check. Bufo and Rana have emerged, are hopping about over muddy areas adjacent to pond. Bozy sun today, sky 1/4 clouded light cumulus cumulostratus type, wind strong from S & SW. Largest metamorphosed toads about 12-13 mm., tail resorbed. Most of these are at N end of pond A suggesting that they resulted from eggs I had observed at this end of pond. One yearling (44 mm.) found in sedge N end.
