EL Kadatum 1955 Buffy Lorenz may 17 Ahwahnee Mdr., 4000 ft., Yosemite Valley, Mariposa Co., Calif. - unknowingly stepping on it and it gave a "meowing" sound. Animal returned & spot worked with a piece of wood thrust in ground. 5:48 p.m. Otter od. -> under a log 10 x 2 x 4" thick, lying in some rotted wood, at soil surface. Closed temp. 18.2° C., Substrate (shadow) 15.3° C. Air 2" above dry grass 24.0° C. Food clipped and released some spot. Appears thin, has fed little. This spot only 10 yards from pond just described. Od. -> spotted in water of this small pond, dived for bottom & returned fully 10 minutes later from working another food, and this one appeared in same position at bottom of pond 8" below surface. Closed 5:59 p.m. 23.0° C. Water temp 1" below surface 23.5° C. Released it in water, Another Food surfaced 5 feet away. Released food approached it (possibly heard few low tremendous notes) and tried emphatically. Same meadow 8:20 p.m. Set up stakes around study pond area. Began survey of yards middle of open meadow. Pair of od 1/2 in small pond 20 yards NW of live cottonwood, are worked earlier today, and second just worked. Byla chasing for oz over all of meadow. Air temp 8:35 9° C. Water temp 19.8° C. Closed of one food the same. Dark by about 9 p.m. Second pond checked located 10 yards SW of main road bordering SW side of Ahwahnee Hotel grounds.
