May 10 SW side of Mariposa, 1900 ft., Mariposa Co., Calif.
11:15 A.M. Quick check of toad breeding site. Todjebs numerous along margins and in deeper slow-moving part of the stream. Stream level same as two weeks ago. Algal bloom more restricted to edges. Aquatic plants beginning to bloom. Older leafed out. Poggies, lupine on rocky slopes in full bloom.
Toad sample taken & preserved. Water temp. in water 1" deep at margin where toads congregated 25.80°C. At 11:25 A.M. In deeper parts of stream (no toads) where moving 3-4 feet per second 15.9°C. Air temp. 2" above ground (full shade) 26.5°C.
Adult bullfrogs disturbed at edges of cat-tails. Again Rana catesbeiana toads and Bufo toads occur in some pools.
Shrewton meadow, 4000 ft., Yosemite Valley 8:15 P.M.
Check here revealed a & one adult toad, separated by 50 yards, and no signs of successful breeding as yet. Ponds A and most of ditch at BS are dry. Some isolated puddles of water. Flowing see data sheet for water on N side of road but few Hyloa only.
Absurbnee meadow this area SW of the Hotel lots see water accumulated in ponds. 21 & toads caught, measured, and released 11:30-12:45 A.M. No females appear to have done little feeding, tend to be skinny and small in comparison to margins o's. Yet calls heard. Hyloa clawing. Sentinel meadow well searched. Not a single toad.
