L Karstam 1955 Bubo L April 27 Sentinel Meadow and area all but continuous except for ponds and small pools. It froze last night even inside my car but today the melt-off has been rapid. By 1 PM most of the snow is off the trees in the middle of the valley. Sentinel meadow late snow depth 6-8". About 30% of Sentinel Meadow open area is affected clumps of grass or water. Cottonwoods along Mead River have new leaves just opened eye. Black oaks budding but no opened leaves. Kingfisher (1), Calif. woodpecker, rufous redwinged nut. chickadee, Stellar's Jay active in meadow. Rufous frog or toads studied along block-top pathways and over done soil. Violet-green and rough-winged swallows (couple pairs?) and Audubon warbler also observed. Stineman Meadow, 4000 ft. 1:30 P.M. Snow melt slower here. Rock to 12-14" some spots. Only meadow margins and runoff stream and pools (made of wood) are free of snow. Water temp of major stream 14.2° C. at 1:35 P.M. 1" below surface where depth 10". Temp. of pool 10x40', max 6" deep was 20.4° C. 1" below surface where depth about 3". The flow on N side of road is continuous. Width of stream 8-10' maximum no standing water south side of road, but melt beginning with today's warm weather.
