Buffo broez
April 26 is boulder-stream, a mixture of gravelly soil and rock
but rock constitutes fully 80-90% of surface.
Red-winged blackbirds singing in over. No adult frogs
heard or seen at this time. The toads observed hugged
SW edge, congregating in greatest numbers right at
the edge where water 1/2" deep or less. Temp. here to
15.80 C. at 12:35 P.M. Those present out from edge
tend to face up current (where current at surface
runs one yard in 6-7 seconds). So far I haven't
observed tadpoles or eggs elsewhere along the 200
yards of stream quickly surveyed.
Although silty bottom areas are present, this
stream is still a rocky-type foothill creek.
Frogs were seen April 13th in all parts of
the stream - deep and shallow water - although
not active in the faster flowing middle channels.
Toad cover in area is extensive. SW of the
stream are some fenced fields, a small working
yard stream with equipment and trucks, houses,
etc. The NE side has heavy brush and sugar
maple plus open field areas and houses behind.
