EL Karlström 1955 Bufo brevis March 23 11:15 P.M. Interesting behavior of adult toads noted. Placed adult ♂ and ♀ collected this evening in large aquarium with 5-6" water. After a half hour the ♂ began amplexus with ♀. The ♀ responded by attempting to climb up glass wall of aquarium. ♂ vigorously forced her head down by pushing his chin forcefully down between her eyes and arching his back at the same time. Agitated "chucking" accompanied his attempts to pin her down. His hind legs were used alternately to force her forelimbs off the glass. The result when followed by swimming leg movements by the ♂ was to force the pair to the bottom of the aquarium where they would remain quiet a few minutes. He act was repeated 3-4 times in 5 minutes. After ½ hour of amplexus the pair separated but remained motionless near each other. The drive behavior has not been seen in the field, but it well could be the normal pattern of the ♂ subduing the ♀ when they first pair up. (?) March 24 Above pair in amplexus 8:10 A.M. today. Pair is quiet, resting on edge of submerged rock in aquarium. Heads only above the water.
