Bulfo toads
march 23
1.3 mi. N, 0.2 mi. W Cusit Carter Richard, Contra Costa Co., Calif - tods also picked up indicating another egg group laid more recently. Hyla outnumber Bulfo toad 10:1 this area. Ostracods, crane-fly larvae very abundant (sample preserved). Bulfo toads observed rasping on dead crane-fly larvae in jar.
Fewer adult toads out tonight. Census of toads seen or caught:
pond A: 3 ♂ → 1 ♀
" B 12 ♂ → 0 ♀
" C 5 ♂ → 1 ♀ (in anglexes)
20 ♂ → 2 ♀
One pair seen in anglexes but I was unable to get them. No toads found out of water, although grassy area dense and evening mild.
Adults difficult to catch, would submerge into murky algae-covered vegetation when disturbed by my head-lamp or rippled water surface.
Recovery of two marked ♂'s (see data sheets)
One ♂ had shifted across pool, under thistle to pond C from A, possibly few hundred yards.
An adult ♀ was collected from middle of pond A for breeding purposes. Inflatad lungs, floating open water. A hole 10 yards away.
