ELKlandatum 1955 Bufo lenaez Feb. 26 Richard, Contra Costa Co., Caly. 7.8° at 7:48 p.m., toad on dirt path 30 yards S of Sanford St. on E side sante Fe raised tracks. Air temp. 2° above wet ground 7.5° E. Another, a ov, collected 10 feet west of middle partition (west side) of pond B on 20° grassy slope, headed away from pond. Choral and air temps. zone or above. Two other adults later (9:00 p.m.) taken near where first captured. One had choral 7.3°C., air temp. 8.1° C. No adults found in vicinity of pond A nor in area at S end of pond B where over 25 were captured Feb. 15. Feb. 7 March 2 Same locality. Night check 8-9:30 p.m. with young Wessenberg. Developing larvae at egg site #1 (see page Pond A) are now stage 17+ (Ballister & Moore 1437), but the loss of embryos seems to be close to approximately 40% at this time. Three normally developing embryos are attached to outer jelly envelope. Defect eggs & embryos (many may have not been fertilized) remain, as would be expected, within the two jelly capsules. All strings appear opaque, whitish and fuzzy even when normal larvae are abundant. This locality harbors a very large breeding population of toads. Weather tonight clear, cool but little breeze. Moon half phase. Air temps.
