Buffer brooks
Feb. 23 Richmond, Contra Costa Co., Calif.
with swollen, opaque jelly coats. Estimated 60% of strings are double strands, rest single. One 2x2' area especially dense with egg strings. Cross-crossed, up to 8 strands deep at one point. I traced out one continuous double (and single some points) strand with my hand. It had a total unbroken length of over 12 feet. Sharp angles around grass stems suggested that ?? ejected considerable terrain on strings as she crossed and re-crossed the strands.
Water temp. here where pond 4" deep, taken 1" below surface 4:00 P.M. 16.8° C.
Pond B at SE end where eggs observed yesterday. Pond temp. 1" below surface 17.0° C., at 4:10 P.M. Water depth 6" here. Many descending eggs near to surface.
Feb. 24 Same locality. Night check here during cold rainstorm. Rained hard over area nearly all day. As I approached the N. Richmond site the rain was literally "coming down in sheets." It eased up to a drizzle about 7:45 P.M., but driving hard SW wind continued. Through clump of three ponds in area. New foods seen in the water, temp. 1" below surface 9.1° C., 8:05 P.M. 4 adults taken in grasses, on path all within 20 feet of ponds. Closed temps. were
