Buffo Goose
Feb. 22 "Rat Island", 4 mi. W San Rafael, Marin Co., Caly.
fragments of avian bones, possibly some small
mammals (a number collected). Lewin kept digging
in middle of depression, churned fine silt down to
inches. Definite fine strata noted. Another
shell mound at extreme opposite end AB quadrants.
Another depression
12' x 8' x 16" maximum depth.
not a fine silt like other depressions but some
porous shell deposit. Vic pointed out an interesting
rodent burrow at SE edge of this depression. Pile
of cuttings noted 1953 in front of hole. It cuts
into 60° sloping bank, opening 5" wide 4" high
at mouth. Slopes inward and downward 20°, gives
in about 8-10" and then forks 4'-forkbin, opening
partially occluded by grasses, and dirt berged out
to the forkbin at base while sloping down to
bottom of sink. Lewin set traps in front of
it but never got any mammals or trods. No
mice have taken this half of island. Duck hunters
have dug a 4' x 8' x 3' pit for a blind in
quadrant A. No signs of insect or other life at
bottom of pit. Phototypic picture this: 2 brush-eys
loafing out, leaves to 2" length. New buds opening
in poison oak but not burst. [A]marrhinia to 6"
height, other grasses to 4-5". Vertebrates observed
were Hermit thrush, 2 Song Sparrows, or ? junco.
The thrush shows extreme territoriality as four
of us got within 5-6 feet of it. Of course,
