Buffo lorerz
Feb. 16 Richmond, Contra Costa Co.
scattered grasses, cut stalks, and a tall (4') dry
composite. Green grass (sedge?) growth to 20"
with up to 10" above water surface. Fair bloom
of algae here, mostly covering surface of pond weeds
presumptable along bottoms. 2:17 p.m. Pair at surface
now 10 feet due south of original position. Single
adult also with head ½ exposed 16" SW from pair.
Another small adult 2' W of pair. My movement
coused one of single individuals to submerge.
Grasses, small piece of wood offer support
to these tools. Now a second angling pair
appears 5 feet from me and 4' N of pair
I was observing. I now will watch some of
these. First a test of how long they will
stay submerged. Single or adult 45 sec. once, then
1½ min. Expelled air from nostrule or it swam
downward after being 20 sec. on surface.
Pair max. Time 45 seconds but these are
disturbed and active. Closed mole swim in
unison female, 9 has arms extended forward
due to pressure of male clasp, but she does
make some breast stroke arm movement.
2:35 p.m. water temp. 14.3° C. 2" below
surface. Air temp. 12.5° C. above water
surface. Depth at stake 11". Notel made with
knife.
