EL Karlstin 1955 Bufo boreas Feb. 16 Richmond, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Pair found pond A in angler at about same spot I worked R-1 adult <> on tour ago. Time 1:49 P.M. Light mist began falling 1:45 P.M. Sky overcast and gray, air tense. NE moderate breeze. She rain on bottom when discovered in 6" of clear water, 45 feet from N edge of pond. Reaction to my presence was to just downward into brownish pond weed and algae forming a 2-3 matting over the silt bottom. Within 3 minutes the & forced both to surface were she gulped air, and then they swam forward and downward to bottom 18" away. The swimming kick movements seem to be initiated by the &, but the male follows suit. At 1:58 they moved 6 feet westward parallel to pond edge, surfaced to breathe, and again moved forward and downward a few feet to the bottom. This repeated again until by 2:04 P.M. they had traveled 45 feet SW of original position. <> seems disturbed by my presence, though I am perfectly still 12 feet from him. He has turned to face my direction now both & and <> have eyes above surface. Remained this position 6 minutes, then submerged and swam 12 feet (underwater) NE toward original position. Depth here varies 8-10 inches.
