EL Karstam 1955 Bufo boreas Feb. 10 Richard, Santa Costa Co., Calif. - weather today feels like spring on its way - sunny, mild, with moderate to brisk NW breeze. The pond is fairly clear except for south end where prevailing winds have forced scum. Algae production moderate, no real bloom, but appears to be rising. Aquatic insects (diving beetles, etc.) occasionally seen. Feb. 15 Same locality 8 P.M. Clear skies, cool temperatures. Toads have emerged for breeding. Two high school youths were in process of stoning five adult o>2 on small road N of pond as I arrived. One died during night, others managed to crawl away. Right behind building (manufacturing plant A.T.S. nd Fry Co.) seems to have attracted toads here for feeding. Water is about 30-40 yards from this grassy area. Pond W of Santa Fe tracks is Pond A (where I have thermometer - see page). Pond B is E of road-bed. Russell, Joe Hall, 2 high school boys aided in census of ponds. 2 adult o>2 seen in Pond A at NE quadrant. 24 o>, 2 ? handled at Pond B and practically all were at southern end where water depth less than 10-12" for most part. 2 pairs in complex but no eggs. Pond A water temp. 13.8°C., air same at 8:45 P.M. All toads left to breed. Croaked
