EL Karlestin 1955 Bufo boreas Feb. 10 1.3 mi N, 0.2 mi W Civic Center, Richmond, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Set up the soils-type thermograph to record water temps. at bottom of pond 4" water depth (setup described later). Also placed one max-min. thermometer inside the wooden case housing the thermograph. Checked setup at 4 P.M. Also pounded a broom handle into the pond and marked present depth. The pond level is down 1 inch from its apparent high Feb. 1. The large pond W of the N-S running S-B tracks is still high, 116 yards long and about 85 yards wide (E-W). Photographs taken with 4x5 Voightlander camera from elevated points S and SE of the pond. Plus-X, #9, 10, and 12. 1/100th second at F11 to F16 late afternoon sun, some haze, about 4:15 P.M. #11 taken of part of pond on east side of built-up railroad right-of-way, facing NE, the part of pond where food toads seen previous spring. Trailer court in background. Water temp. 15.2° C. at 4:15 P.M. 1" below water surface where pond 3" deep. Air temp. 14.8° C. 2" above dry grass beside pond. Some evidence of additional Bufo reproduction as more egg clusters observed (see Bufo notes) but no sign of toad eggs or adults. A young 12-year old claimed he saw strings of eggs in large pond W side (where I have temperature equipment). I hope he's correct, and they lay here again.
