Bufo boreas
Jan. 10
1.3 mi. N, 0.2 mi. W Civic Center, Richmond,
Contra Costa Co., Calif. Visited this area following
heavy weekend showers which ended sometime
during morning hours. Today the weather has been
overcast and windy - cool temperatures as we've
had for many weeks. Water temp. 4:30 P.M.
11.5° C., air above dense grass 11.0°C.
Overcast, but intermittent sunshine along with
cool winds. Ponds high with water. Few
Faw
Hyla moles out and sporadically calling but
no eggs laid as yet. Some Hyla under
broad litter, few Batrachoseps but no Bufo,

Same locality. Checked very large pond to W side
of N-S running SP tracks. Hyla in someones
shores. Moles near edges, on vegetation or litter
surface flutter out in water. Water temp. 7:35
P.M. 9.50 C., air 2" above water 8.2°C. Air
over dry grass surface 5.8° C. Moderately
NW breeze, clear sky, bright 3/4 moon. Water
level up about 6" from last visit, and this
pond probably 10-15 yards wider than in January.
No sign of toads or eggs. Air temperature
predicted 35-40° tonight, feels it now here.
It seems too early for toad breeding. Hyla
egg deposition has just begun as evidenced
by half dozen egg clusters recently deposited.
