Oct.7 Left MV2 at 2:45 P.M. accompanied by Bill
Hamilton. Stopped Radiation Safety Lab at Cowell to
pick up 2 geiger counters and a scintillometer. Finally
collected Harold Robinson at his place and headed
out Hwy 24 to Walnut Creek at 3:40 P.M.
Clear, mild weather. Great Valley appeared quite
dry. Supper at La Paloma in Merced 7 P.M.
and pushed me Hwy 140 to Fox Valley. Clear
cool evening. Spent night at Rangers' Club in Valley.
Oct.8 Rolled out 6:45 A.M. and headed after Lodge
Breakfast (Country Cleaner "Red" Walling,
breakfast cook) to Tioga. Dred poor-well collected
on road to Crave Flat about three miles from that
Entrance Station. Arrived Tioga Pass 9:10 A.M. B.S.T.,
clear, cool (48 deg F at Station) with fresh southerly
wind. Worked study area almost continuously with
scintillometer and two geiger counters for total of
about 16 man-hours. One adult & conure picked
up by night (two-dissel but no Co60 tag) six
juvenile conures and a few thylar young-of-year
also taken. Mountain bluebird, junco's, a robin
(sighted by G. Robinson) active in area. Red-tail
hawk and a snake-skin spotted on way up to
Pass (above 8500 ft.) about 9:00 A.M.
Left Tioga 6 P.M. for Valley. Night clocks (brief)
of Churchline area, Stormy Miller 9:00-9:45 P.M.
