ELKarlston 1953 Journal June 26 due to protective ridge, Snow on N-facing slopes but none in meadows. Barn abundant but no Dyla today. (951.4) 3 P.M. We reached Highland Lake. Clear skies but very strong cold wind blowing over the Lake. We worked NE end of lake. Adult, juvenile B. cornua taken but no young or eggs. The last three cornua broodlets give an excellent idea of effect of altitude and temperature on breeding & development. Some snow patches left in meadow area, larger drifts on slopes. Work climbed up unnamed peak on east side of Lake. Here at [illegible] ft. he collected two more adult & cornua. One definitely swollen with eggs. 5 P.M. We returned to route 4, over Ebbett Pass to Marbleville. Groceries $1.97. Then to Woodfords via Cornice Canyon for Williams, then left to Faith Valley. Pasture ponds & streams flow checked Fail to along the road. No cornua. Supper 7 P.M. at Horse Valley public campground. Evening drive out check of ponds adjacent to road Faith Valley. Evening cold (8-10° C) and unproductive. Barn only seen. Came along road about middle of Faith Valley. June 27 Recorded end 300 feet of road no. 7 7:30-5:30 A.M. white-crowned sparrow, sample birds, etc. Check of 4-5 meadow ponds in Faith Valley. Dyla took only. Large herd of cattle trampled watering ponds but still good breeding water available. Bifurcated toadpole collected Christy Valley, 2700 ft. in large deep pond E side of road. 10:30 A.M.
