Elkordstein 1955 Journal June 13 Information from the lady at the school was that the road was almost impassable. I can believe that often we almost dragged down trying to reach the lake from the north and east approaches. Slight clay road ran Big Pine. Single or B. brown taken roadside just north of town at 10:55 P.M. June 14 Drive into Bridge to clean up and get breakfast. Gas 12.5 gals., $4.70 (5986.9). Clear sunny morning. We circled up Sherwin Grade in Mora County. Slue me MVZ looks from Little Round Valley. From near McGee Creek Rest on Hwy 395, Mor Co. [illegible] a dirt road winds up 2 miles to McGee Creek Park station. I talked with Russ Johnson of San Diego, owner of the station. He identified a Bubo lower I showed him as the kind he had seen near his springs a few days ago. The carrion and hyla were forms he recalled seeing up at higher elevations. If his sight record of lower is correct then it would place the species above 8000 ft. We checked pasturing vendors, the orange for signs of eggs or larvae. No luck. Warm sunny day with moderate breeze. It's possible to drive 1/2 mile further up Canyon. Stream bottom here choked willow and aspen. Returned to highway 2:30 P.M. and drove S on 795 to Tonis Golden eagle at 8000 ft. along road. Place for groceries. Then we drove up dirt (fair slope) road to Rock Creek Lake, 9727 ft, Junge Co. Camp at small lake just below the large lake. Looks like carrion collected but no luck. Night check negative. June 15 Camp at Rock Creek Lake. Recorded bird calls 8-8:30 P.M.
