June 7
Deer, song finch (2), gurnees, white-crowned sparrows
in Pass area. Returned to Huntington 3:30 P.M. to
work on specimens, took mugger, Western townee (2)
heard & seen. Motorboat on lake prevented recording it.
left Billy Creek Camp in Huntington 8 P.M. Drove
Hwy 168 to Fresno by 10:15 P.M. Hot (in 80½)
in Valley. Stayed overnight at L.D. Moore's.
June 8
Left Fresno 8 A.M. via Hwy 180 to Kings
Canyon. Hot morning, clear and still. Excellent
highway into Park. Valley floor and lower foothills
very dry. Good transition zone not reached until well
over 4000 feet elevation. Shrikes, sculp gulls, Calif.
woodpecker, linnets seen upper canyon zone along road.
Talked with Stanley D. Bechtel, Dist. Ranger, K.C.
Nat'l Park at Entrance Station. He reports birds out
at night in residential area due at Grant Grove
(where I'm writing this). He didn't recall seeing
toads in Booring River Canyon while near N into
S Fork of Kings River. One of his men is going into
canyon then in 10 days. Bechtel promised cooperation
in getting toads (or pictures) for me. Write one of K.C.
I gave him my name and Yosemite address.
Grant Grove 10:30 A.M. Warm & clear. Took
Kodakhome $25. Drove west Riviera Vista 50 people facing
Ex N.E. toward Ingh County above Kings Canyon.
This Granite Lakes area should be checked someday for
draft canaries but we do not have the time to push up
