Old Squaw
Clangula hyemalis Nyrocina
7 May. Holkham Bay.
Harbor Island West Cove.
Almost at any time of the
day, these ducks may be seen
and heard around the southern
tip of the island where the water
is about 2 fathom deep, diving
or flying about. They usually
travel in small flocks of 5 or
10. Each flock will dive at
about the same time & surface
together. As soon as they
surface, immediately the
musical sound is uttered.
Dive is fast, head over quick
& down with a plink.
