Old Squaw Duck.
Clangula hyemalis Nyroinae
7 May Harbor Island, S.E. part.
These ducks seen in groups of 4-10 in the shallow water 5ft-15ft around the southern end of the island. Identified by their melodious quacking and summer plumage. Song starts with one or several short squeaks or whistles which seem to reluctantly follow each other, then the song concludes quickly with the musical pattern which ascends in three distinct tones - o-sk-a-link. These ducks dive and will stay non-dier for 30-40 seconds. Their voices can be heard almost any time of the day.
