M Johnston 1948 Common Loon 3 29 Aug. Holkham Bay, Alaska Channel between Harbord. & Eagle I. A pair seen swimming and diving with the current as it passed northwestward thru Chan. Both in winter plumage. 2 Sept Holkham Bay Alaska S.E. cave, Harbor Island. Three in winter plumage seen swimming slowly around in the cove. Did not dive for 3 or 4 minutes. Dove - stayed under 28 seconds - came up about in same place. - Swimming + dipping their bills. One unfolded its wings and held them outward in a drooping arch for about 5 seconds then stood up shook its wings then settled back into the water. A second one did the same a minute later. These were within 50 ft of shore, water about 2 fathom
